Spectacle and Impermanence, as part of The Happening, March 2011
presented by: University of Toronto Art Dpt, Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, Design
Site specific and participatory, Spectacle and Impermanence evolved as a one-off performative occurrence in collaboration with Katherine Porter and the attendees of the U of T Happening. In the long and low ceilinged hallway of a basement, paint pigments were patiently and precisely shaken onto the floor forming a tapestry, an elaborate flag, or carpet runner. Providing two pairs of roller skates Spectacle and Impermanence made space for an unspoken invitation to those who visited, challenging social rules of engagement and creating a space of play in an otherwise decrepit and disused space.
